Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are more common than many people realise — and more treatable than many patients expect. At Life Performance Osteo in Belgian Gardens, Townsville, Dr Phillip Murray sees patients experiencing jaw pain, clicking, locking, and associated headaches, and addresses TMJ dysfunction as part of a broader osteopathic assessment.
What is the TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint connects the jawbone (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone) just in front of each ear. It is one of the most complex joints in the body — capable of hinging, gliding, and rotating — and is in almost constant use throughout the day through speaking, eating, and swallowing.
What causes TMJ disorders?
TMJ dysfunction can arise from jaw clenching or teeth grinding (bruxism) — often stress-related, muscle tension in the jaw, head, and neck, trauma to the jaw or face, postural issues affecting the cervical spine and how the head sits on the neck, and dental changes or occlusal issues. The relationship between the jaw, the neck, and the craniosacral system means that TMJ disorders frequently present alongside neck pain, headaches, and upper back tension.
How does osteopathic care address TMJ disorders?
Dr Murray's approach to TMJ dysfunction includes assessment of the jaw joint itself alongside the cervical spine and craniosacral system. Treatment may involve soft tissue therapy to the muscles of mastication, craniosacral therapy — a gentle approach particularly well-suited to TMJ and head-related presentations — and cervical spine treatment to address contributing postural and structural factors. Collaboration with your dentist is often recommended for bruxism-related presentations.
